U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has said that the Trump administration will continue pursuing the path toward peace in Ukraine, no matter how long it takes.
He stated this to reporters at Joint Base Andrews, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.
“We’re going to keep on walking down the pathway of peace, whether it takes us another few months, another few weeks, or, God forbid, longer than that, we’re going to keep on working at it,” Vance said.
He added that he remains optimistic, but the timeline is still unclear.
When asked whether Ukraine might receive Tomahawk missiles, Vance said the U.S. president “is certainly hearing that request” from the Ukrainians.
“We know that it’s something that they want. That’s something that the president is going to ultimately decide. But he has not yet made he decision to give Tomahawks to Ukraine,” Vance said.
When asked what is holding the administration back from taking this step, he explained that Trump’s priority is America’s own security.
“That means that we need to have the critical weapon systems for our own military, for our own troops. So that’s what the President is focused on,” Vance added.
He stressed that in making decisions regarding Ukraine and Russia, Trump seeks to promote peace, as he believes that is in America’s best interest.
“If he thinks that it’s in America’s best interest to sell additional weapons to Europe, he will do that. But right now, he hasn’t made that decision with regards to the Tomahawks,” Vance said.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that the United States “can’t give all of our weapons to Ukraine” because the country needs them for its own defense.
