Fourth Ukrainian Company Starts Renewable Biomethane Exports to EU

Ukrainian YM Liquid Gas LLC company exported liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) for the first time, becoming the fourth company in Ukraine to supply biomethane abroad, the consulting agency ExPro Daily Gas reported.

The company exports liquefied biomethane produced at its own facilities to Germany, where the buyer is Cyprus-based Preture Liquid Gas, which is the founder of YM Biogas Company. Thus, both companies belong to the same corporate group, according to the Ukrainian YouControl business registry.

YM Liquid Gas LLC has become Ukraine’s fourth biomethane exporter. Vitagro made the first shipment on Feb. 7, 2025, followed by MHP on Feb. 11 and HOPAK in June. Altogether, Ukrainian producers exported around 6.5 million cubic meters (mcm) of gaseous biomethane in 2025, most of it from MHP, according to ExPro.

The company is also the second Ukrainian producer to export bio-LNG, after Oril Leader from the MHP Group, which has delivered about 2,800 tons to Germany since May 2025, ExPro reported.

Four biomethane plants with a total annual capacity of 41 million cubic meters were operating as of mid-2025, ExPro reported citing the data from the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine. Three of them already supply biomethane to the national grid.

By the end of 2025, biomethane producers plan to commission additional plants with a capacity of up to 70 mcm per year and increase the total capacity to 111 mcm per year,  ExPro reported.

Merkel’s remark that “Baltic countries and Poland” in 2021 rejected her attempt to launch a new EU dialogue with Vladimir Putin was received in the east of the continent as a moral blow.

YM Liquid Gas transports Biomethane by road tankers. In September-October 2025, the company exported nearly 60 tons of liquefied biomethane, ExPro estimates. It produces the fuel at its Yuzefo-Mykolayivskyi Biogas Plant in the Vinnytsia region, using sugar beet pulp and broiler chicken manure as feedstock.

How Ukraine started producing and selling biomethane

The European Union aims to produce 35 billion cubic meters of biomethane annually by 2030, but currently only produces 15 billion cubic meters. This relative economic scarcity creates opportunities for external suppliers, including Ukraine.

In February 2023, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen signed a memorandum on strategic cooperation in biomethane and synthetic gases. Two months later, Gals Agro launched Ukraine’s first biomethane plant.

However, in February 2024, the company suspended production. Natural gas exports were restricted due to Russia’s war in Ukraine, and selling biomethane domestically was unprofitable.

Production costs range from €600 to €900 ($698 to $1047) per 1,000 cubic meters, while the domestic gas price in Ukraine is about €350 ($407).

By late 2024, Vitagro and Hals Agro restarted biomethane production. In 2023, Vitagro built a €6 million (about $6.3 million at that time) plant in the western Ukrainian city of Khmelnytsky with a capacity of 3 million cubic meters per year. The company began injecting biomethane into the gas grid in October 2024, with Gals Agro following suit in November.

In March 2024, Ukraine’s legislature, the Verkhovna Rada, clarified customs regulations for biomethane exports.
