Ukraine’s university hockey team has pulled off a sensational victory over Czechia in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Winter Universiade, held at the Pinerolo Ice Palace in Italy.
The regulation time ended in a 3-3 draw, but Mykyta Kruhliakov’s goal in overtime sealed Ukraine’s position in the tournament’s semifinals.
In the Universiade semifinals, Ukraine’s team will face the winner of the Slovakia-Kazakhstan match. Furthermore, the United States will compete with the winner of the Canada-Japan match for a spot in the final.
Notably, Ukraine has won two hockey medals at the Universiade: gold in 1999 and bronze in 2001.
The semifinals are planned for 21 January, with the gold and bronze medal matches taking place on 22 January.
