Slovaks raise millions of euros for Ukraine and oppose their government’s pro-Russian stance

It is known that over 4 million euros were collected by Slovaks in the last month to provide weapons for the Ukrainian army.

The ‘Ammunition for Ukraine’ initiative was launched in mid-April and collected around 67,000 donations within a month.

The initiative comes after the Foreign Minister, Juraj Blanar, announced that Slovakia would not send weapons to Ukraine because “there is no military solution to the war”.

According to the organizers of the initiative to donate money for ammunition purchases, many of them do not agree with the government’s pro-Russian stance, leading to widespread support for their cause.

As Lucia Stasselova, one of the main organizers of the initiative, points out, the idea came from a photojournalist and head of the Open Society network.

“The government is not ready to help, but the people living in Slovakia want to help,” said Stasselova.
