Russia’s defense ministry says the country’s forces have captured a settlement in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region.
Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov congratulated the troops involved in the operation on Monday. He said their “courageous and decisive action” made it possible to repel enemy forces.
The governor of Kharkiv said on social media on Monday that residents have been forced to evacuate from 10 settlements in the region.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media on Monday that troops were holding back nearly 50,000 enemy soldiers in Kursk, western Russia. Ukrainian troops are engaged in a cross-border offensive in the region.
The New York Times had said on Sunday that 50,000 Russian and North Korean soldiers have assembled in Kursk, and that Ukrainian officials expect a major assault to be launched in the coming days.
