Geopolitical commentator Fareed Zakaria has suggested that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict presents Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a unique opportunity to act as a mediator, allowing India to flex its diplomatic influence. In a conversation with India Today, Zakaria emphasized Modi’s standing on the global stage, suggesting that he could play a vital role in ending the war.
Modi’s Diplomatic Credibility
Zakaria highlighted that few leaders worldwide have the trust and influence to negotiate with both Russia and Ukraine, naming Turkey’s President Erdogan and PM Modi as prime candidates. He expressed that Modi could be even more effective than Erdogan in this capacity, given his global stature.
India’s Opportunity to Lead
Zakaria called this Modi’s “great opportunity to be a global statesman.” While India traditionally adopts a neutral position in global conflicts, Zakaria believes that stepping in as a mediator could dramatically enhance India’s role and influence in international diplomacy.
