Kyiv Post presents Defenders Kitchen, a documentary project filmed in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, just dozens of kilometers from Russian positions, showing what life looks like near the front line beyond combat.
The first episode follows soldiers of the 429th Achilles Separate Unmanned Systems Brigade, where daily routines unfold under the constant threat of shelling, drone attacks and artillery fire. In these conditions, food becomes more than a basic necessity. It is a brief moment of pause for servicemen returning from missions, a chance to gather, speak and recover before heading back to their positions. Using limited supplies, soldiers adapt and improvise, finding ways to prepare meals despite the constraints of war.

At the center of the project is Hector Jiménez-Bravo, a Canadian-Ukrainian chef who has spent more than a decade building his life in Ukraine. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, he has been traveling closer to the front line, supporting Ukrainian troops not as a soldier, but as a cook. In this episode, he prepares meals alongside servicemen and speaks with them about their experiences and motivations.
The project is reported by Kyiv Post journalist Kateryna Zakharchenko, focusing on the human dimension of war through everyday moments.
The next episode will follow the Khartiia Brigade, moving even closer to the front line, where cooking takes place in field conditions under greater risk.
